The embarkation of the Virgin

On Tuesday, July 14th, residents and tourists from all over the island come together to celebrate the big day. The procession starts in the morning with a traditional chocolate and sweets breakfast to recharge energy; then the statue “Virgen del Carmen and San Telmo” goes on a round trip on the shoulders of the faithful fishermen from the church Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia. Devoting the audience, the procession passes through the fishing district to the port where the statue goes on a boat to continue to the sea.

History of the embarkation

This tradition began in 1923 when fishermen and sailors from Puerto de la Cruz made the procession of their patron from Los Realejos. But it took over 20 years to pass this tradition to Puerto de la Cruz. In 1954 the sculptor Angel Acosta Martin donated the “Virgen del Carmen” to the church Nuestra Señora de la Peña.
